But we are taking a closer look at the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Antoine de Saint Exupéry” (Ref. IW503801). With this watch the German watch manufacturer pays tribute to the extraordinary life’s work of a great humanist and aviation pioneer. With the tobacco brown dial and a calfskin strap, both of which call to mind Saint-Exupéry’s flying suit, IWC’s designers have ensured that this watch too, is outstanding and instantly recognizable. Since the beginning of the partnership between IWC Schaffhausen and the Fondation Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 2005, these colours established themselves as the hallmarks of the “Antoine de Saint-Exupéry” editions.

The watch is packed with technical features. The perpetual calendar shows not only the lunar cycles but also the seconds, minutes, hours, date, day, month and year in four digits. Mechanically programmed, all the displays are automatically advanced and will take into account different month lengths and all the leap days in the Gregorian calendar until 2100, without the need for a single correction. Not until 1st of March 2100 a watchmaker will need to adjust the calendar manually.
This is the first time that the IWC-manufactured 52610 calibre movement from the new 52000 family has been used in a Pilot’s Watch. Twin barrels supply the power needed to provide 7 days’ running time and to drive the additional functions and displays.

The polished bezel underscores the singular quality of the watch as much as the sun-pattern finish on the dial does. The cone-shaped crown is reminiscent of the pioneering age of aviation. The rhodium-plated hour and minute hands and the indices are coated with luminescent material, while the red-tipped date, day and month hands recall cockpit instruments. The power reserve display, which is combined with the date display at 3 o’clock on the dial, slowly counter clockwise from 1 to 7, indicating that the movement is fully wound. A glance through the transparent sapphire-glass back reveals the movement’s design.
The 46-millimetre stainless-steel case is water-resistant to 6 bar and the glass secured against displacement by drops in air pressure.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Antoine de Saint Exupéry” features the brown Santoni calfskin strap with the eye-catching seams and thus recalls, once again, Saint Exupéry’s flying suit.

É um movimento automático que funciona a 3 HZ (21.600 oscilações por hora) e que pode ser encontrado em inúmeros outros modelos, quer da Seiko quer de fabricantes independentes que usam os movimentos da marca japonesa. A caixa em aço é bastante grande para um relógio simples, com 45mm de diâmetro e uma altura de 15mm, mas devo dizer que acho o desenho muito elegante e conseguido, com um mostrador de grande equilíbrio.

A marca possui outros relógios com movimentos mecânicos e de quartzo bastante interessantes, aos quais voltarei mais tarde. A Vostok Europe é representada em Portugal através da SRI.

Momentum Vortech GMT

Os relógios são comprados normalmente por razões estéticas, de moda e/ou de status. Na maioria dos casos, adquirimos cronógrafos porque gostamos e não propriamente porque os usemos para cronometrar corridas… E atrevo-me a dizer que o mesmo acontece com maioria dos relógios de mergulho: não acredito que esta popular categoria seja apenas usada por quem pretende efetivamente levar o relógio para dentro de água.

E no entanto, faz sentido adquirir um relógio de acordo com a sua previsível utilização. É o caso deste Vortech GMT, da empresa canadiana Momentum que, na Europa, vende sobretudo através da Amazon.co.uk.

O conceito por detrás deste modelo é a de ser um “relógio para viajantes”. Porquê? Por duas razões: a funcionalidade de um segundo fuso horário (ponteiro amarelo) e a presença de um despertador (ponteiro vermelho).

De facto, a conjugação destas duas funcionalidades tem toda a lógica num relógio para quem viaja com frequência, porque tem a necessidade não só de saber qual a hora local mas também a hora no fuso de horário da sua residência. Além disso, também tem de acordar a determinadas horas… e não tem ninguém que o acorde nem um despertador na mesa de cabeceira.

A execução geral deste relógio é muito do meu agrado, embora esteja no limite do razoável em termos de dimensões: a sua caixa em titânio tem 44mm de diâmetro. Outras características incluem ponteiro de segundos num sub-mostrador às 2H00 e data às 4H30, mostrador em vidro mineral temperado (vidro de safira disponível como opção) e resistência à água até 100 metros. A Momentum indica que o movimento – de quartzo – é de origem suíça, mas não diz qual.

Existem três variações deste modelo, com bracelete em pele (na foto), em borracha e em titânio. O preço, na Amazon.co.uk, é de £234, £222 e £330 (já com portes), respetivamente.

Lorus Sports RT351CX9

Dizia-me há tempos um amigo, bem mais conhecedor do que eu destas coisas dos relógios, que “um cronógrafo é como uma carrinha – é sempre mais bonita do que o automóvel que lhe serve de base”. É uma metáfora gira e, embora nem sempre verdadeira no que diz respeito aos automóveis, é efetivamente quase sempre assim com os relógios.

A verdade é que sempre que faço aqui uma referência a um cronógrafo, as visualizações disparam face a relógios convencionais de três ponteiros. Um cronógrafo é sempre um relógio com o seu quê de especial; e, nos tempos que correm, nem sequer tem de ser muito mais caro.

É esse o caso deste modelo da coleção Sports da Lorus (a marca amais acessível do grupo Seiko), com a referência RT351CX9. Baseado numa caixa em aço de 44mm de diâmetro e resistência à água até 100 metros, este cronógrafo com movimento de quartzo possui mostrador tem um desenho muito equilibrado, com sub-mostradores às 3h00, 6h00 e 9h00, data às 4h30 e numerais árabes nas posições horárias pares.

O esquema monocromático do desenho (preto e branco/prateado) é apenas quebrado pelo vermelho dos ponteiros de segundos. A pulseira também em aço é integrada na caixa e o conjunto inclui ainda uma escala taquimétrica no bisel da caixa.

Redux COURG

Gosto muito de relógios tipo piloto, mas tal como acontece com os modelos de mergulho, também neste tipo de máquinas não é fácil encontrar a conjugação de dimensões, materiais, acabamentos (e preço!) que me agradem. E no entanto, este COURG da novíssima Redux & Co. parece conseguir fazer isso mesmo.

A empresa, norte-americana, é mesmo muito nova, tendo sido lançada através de dois websites de "crowdfunding", o Kickstarter e o Bakerkit. Pelos vistos, não devo ser o único que engraçou com estes relógios, porque a empresa conseguiu, no conjunto de ambos os websites, angariar mais de 835 mil dólares (!) à data deste post.

Não me vou alongar na história da empresa, que é contada em pormenor aqui, mas vale a pena determo-nos um pouco neste relógio. A primeira surpresa é que a caixa, ao contrário do que poderíamos imaginar nas fotos sem escala, tem "apenas" 39mm de diâmetro. E ponho apenas com aspas porque nos tempos que correm parece que 42mm se tornou no novo normal e que tudo o que seja abaixo dos 40mm é considerado como sendo pequeno.

A outra surpresa é descobrir que estas caixas usam titânio em vez de aço, o que é algo que nunca vi num "micro brand". O resto, são tudo boas surpresas – o desenho do mostrador, inspirado nos instrumentos analógicos dos velhos aviões da WWII é limpo e dispensa qualquer tipo de inscrições; o movimento automático Seiko NH35A usado em todos os modelos foi rodado de forma a termos a coroa às 4h00 e, muito embora esta decisão nem sempre coloque a janela de data numa posição harmoniosa, o seu formato circular e o facto de usar numerais brancos em fundo negro, compõem um desenho final praticamente perfeito; e o bisel unidirecional foi desenhado de tal forma que permite não só a contagem do tempo como a exibição de um segundo fuso horário.

Weekend Watch News: Scott Pruett Wins at the Tudor Championship in Austin

This past weekend was a great one for racecar lovers. While it was a rainy Saturday in Austin, Texas, the wet weather didn’t’ stop anyone from getting out to The Circuit of the America’s — one of the best auto racing venues in North America — for the Tudor United Sportscar Championship.

TUDOR is actively involved in auto racing and this year marks the first official year of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship. Baume & Mercier Unveils Clifton Perpetual Calendar

It isn't every day a Swiss watch brand in the affordable luxury category, such as Baume & Mercier, unveils a more expensive complicated watch. In fact, for this brand, it is only about once a year. To demonstrate its technical savior-faire and true watchmaking capabilities, once annually for the past five years, Baume & Mercier has released a specially made complicated piece in its much-loved Clifton collection. This year, that piece is a perpetual calendar watch.



The Clifton Perpetual Calendar features a silver opaline dial with day, date, month, leap year and moon phase indications. The perpetual calendar tracks day, date (taking into account different lengths of the months), month, year, leap year and moon phases via a mechanical memory of 1,461 days (four years).

Crafted in 18-karat 5N rose gold, the watch is powered by an automatic Vaucher 5401 base caliber that features a Dubois Depraz 5100 module for tracking the celestial factors, such as moon phase and perpetual timing.

Baume & Mercier designed and developed the concept in its Geneva headquarters, and the finishing and assembly in the its Les Brenets (Jura Mountains) workshops. The dial — harmoniously balanced with four sundials — is slightly domed, and its fine silver opaline finish gives it a vintage appeal. Ich habe bereits erwähnt, dass es eine Verbindung zwischen vielen der japanischen Modeuhren der späten 90er Jahre gibt. Bisher habe ich eine Verbindung zwischen Deadman, Eccentric Classic und Deep erwähnt, aber dies ist eine andere.

Diese Uhr ist von einer Marke namens Sniper. Es handelt sich um eine ungewöhnlich geformte ana-digi Uhr, bei der die Anzeige um 45 Grad gedreht wurde und so auch die Tasten / Krone. Es hat ein 3 Hand analoges Zifferblatt an der Oberseite des Gesichts, mit einem 4 + 2 stelligen LCD-Display unten (mit 4 großen und 2 kleinen Ziffern). Die Uhrmodi werden auf dem LCD-Display angezeigt und zeigen die Tag- / Datums-, Doppelzeit-, Stoppuhr- oder Alarmoptionen an, die von der unteren linken Taste ausgewählt werden. Vom Gefühl des Materials denke ich, dass der Fall unedles Metall ist, und wird als 3atm wasserdicht zitiert. Die Gehäuseform ist nach rechts oben verlängert und erinnerte mich irgendwie an den Millennium Falcon aus Star Wars.

Da es sich um ein ungewöhnliches Design handelt, ist es einfacher zu sehen, wann dasselbe von anderen Marken verwendet wird. Ich habe diese Uhr auch von J Axis gesehen, und es gibt auch eine Deadman-Version (die ich leider noch nicht habe - möchte aber, wenn einer meiner Leser einen verkauft). Die Modellnummer ist GV451, die ebenfalls dem Deadman-Nummerierungssystem folgt und darauf hindeutet, dass sie irgendwie verknüpft sind.

Ich würde vermuten, dass dies aus dem gleichen Zeitrahmen wie die Deadman Uhren sein wird, basierend auf dem gemeinsamen Design, so dass es Ende der 90er Jahre machen würde.

LCD-Uhr für Jungen London B337

Ich habe bisher viele Uhren von Boy London gebloggt, aber das ist etwas ganz anderes.

Der Name Boy London gibt es seit den 70er Jahren und viele Uhren wurden unter ihrem Namen hergestellt. Die Geschichte der Uhren ist ein Rätsel, und mein Gefühl ist bisher, dass der Name seit den 90er Jahren von einem anderen Unternehmen (möglicherweise Koreaner) gekauft / verwendet wurde. Weitere Informationen über die Marke finden Sie in meinen vielen anderen Boy London Blog Posts (siehe die Tags auf der rechten Seite der Webseite).

Dieses besondere Modell ist das B337 und ist ungewöhnlich, weil es nur eine kleine Anzahl von LCD-Uhren ist, die ich von Boy London gesehen habe. Es hat ein großes schwarzes Plastikgehäuse mit der Anzeige, die in 3 Abschnitte unterteilt wird. Das obere deckt Tag und Datum ab, der rechte Kreis hat Segmente, die mit den Sekunden umspringen, und der Hauptunterabschnitt ist für die Zeit. Im Text auf dem Gesicht beschreibt es sich als Chronograph und hat daher eine Stoppuhr-Funktion, und es hat auch Alarm-und Dual-Time-Modi.

Die Vorderseite der Uhr hat nur den Namen Boy London im Klartext (was nicht üblich ist), und der Name United Kingdom wird ebenfalls über dem Display angezeigt. Die Rückseite hat den üblicheren Jungen London-Namen und Totemart Eagle-Logo sowie die Modellnummer. Die Rückseite hat auch den Text "BoyLondon ursprünglichen Uhr. Erstellt von Großbritannien. Wasserdicht 50m". Da es "erstellt von" nicht "geschaffen in" sagt, schlägt es die Firma vor, die es machte, wurde United Kingdom genannt, oder es ist gerade schlechtes Englisch!

Was das Datum anbelangt, denke ich, dass es neuer ist als die anderen Boy London Designs, also würde ich vermuten, dass es irgendwann in den 2000ern ist.
